The Alabama School of Mathematics and Science (ASMS) in Mobile is a fully public, residential high school. For fall 2027 it accepts applications from current 8th, 9th and 10th graders, and the year brings the school's first 9th grade class. The application is free and done entirely online. This guide lists the published dates in the order families meet them, and what to do at each step.
One caution first. ASMS says all dates are subject to change and are updated each year, so check the school's admissions page before you plan around any single day.
Who is applying in this cycle
The 2027-28 application is open to students who are currently in 8th, 9th or 10th grade. That means a student can enter ASMS in 9th, 10th or 11th grade in fall 2027. Beginning in fall 2027, ASMS will welcome an inaugural class of 9th grade students. The school links a flipbook about the 9th grade program from its admissions page. We could not read that flipbook, so we do not describe class size or how 9th graders will live on campus. Ask the admissions office if that matters to your decision.
August 3, 2026: the application opened
The application opened on August 3, 2026. The first step is an online admissions account, which the school sets up through its admissions portal. ASMS asks families to allow one business day for the account request to be processed, so do not wait until the week materials are due.
September 12 and November 7, 2026: ASMS Day
ASMS Day is held on Saturday, September 12, 2026 and Saturday, November 7, 2026. The school describes campus tours, time with faculty and staff, and classroom demonstrations. If you are reading this in early November, the second date is very close. Tours are also offered on Mondays and Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. They last about one hour and do not include the residence halls or classes.
ASMS also visits cities across Alabama every fall for one-hour weeknight sessions from 6 to 7 p.m. You hear from admissions staff and sometimes faculty, students or alumni. The school's page does not list the 2027 cities and dates, so check it for updates.
Fall and winter: gather the materials
A complete application has these parts: ACT or SAT scores (not required for 9th grade applicants), academic records with current grades, discipline records, two teacher recommendations, and a parent or guardian questionnaire. ASMS considers the application complete only when every required item has arrived, and it does not review incomplete applications.
Because teachers and school offices send some of these items, give them time. A sensible order is to request the two teacher recommendations early, one from a current math or science teacher and one from a current English or history teacher. Then ask your school to send transcripts and current grades. Every record should show your student's full name.
Testing deserves its own plan. ASMS lists no minimum score and no preferred test. If your student is applying for 10th or 11th grade, choose a test date that leaves room for a retake before the deadline. Our guide to the application pieces covers the testing rules in more detail.
February 6, 2027: application materials are due
The school lists February 6, 2027 as the date application materials are due. Treat it as the day everything must be in, not the day to start. If a teacher is late, your student's file stays incomplete.
ASMS also says applications will be accepted until July 2027, or until all available spaces are filled. That sentence is not a reason to wait. The February date is the one tied to interviews and decisions, and the school does not say how many spaces exist.
January to February 2027: interviews
Applicants who submit all required materials may be invited to interview with a member of the Admissions Committee. Interviews run from January to February, last about 30 to 45 minutes, and may be in person or virtual. The school does not publish exact interview dates. Because the invitation depends on a finished file, an early, complete application gives your family the most room to schedule.
February 2027: decisions
Decisions are listed as available in February. The school does not name a specific day, so we do not either. A decision is one of four kinds: Admitted, Waitlisted, Deferred or Denied. Waitlisted candidates remain under consideration, though admission cannot be guaranteed. A deferred applicant hears again no later than May 1. Eligible applicants who are denied are encouraged to reapply in a future cycle.
Two other points matter here. The admissions process is strictly confidential, so the school does not share the specific reasons behind a decision. And every admission decision is conditional on verification of the information provided.
After a yes
Admitted families accept in the admissions portal and complete an enrollment contract that includes a $150 enrollment fee. Students must attend a required orientation, which includes biology and math placement tests. The accepted-students page we read still shows dates from the 2026-27 cycle, so the fall 2027 deadlines for the contract, orientation and financial assistance are not stated here. Confirm them in your acceptance materials.
What the school does not publish
ASMS does not publish an admit rate, the number of seats, or typical test scores. We do not guess at any of them. If a number is important to your decision, ask the admissions office at admissions@asms.net or 251-441-2100.
A simple checklist
1. Confirm your student is a current 8th, 9th or 10th grader. 2. Create the admissions account and allow one business day. 3. Choose an ACT or SAT date, unless your student is applying for 9th grade. 4. Ask two teachers for recommendations. 5. Ask your school to send records, and complete the parent or guardian questionnaire yourself. 6. Submit everything before February 6, 2027. 7. Watch for an interview invitation from January to February.
